Freshmen
9th Grade College Counseling Calendar

Establish college-preparatory classes. Your schedule should consist of at least 4 college preparatory classes per year to meet the UC “a-g” requirements:

o 4 years of English

o 3 years of math (through Intermediate Algebra or Algebra II)

o 2 years of foreign language (3 recommended)

o 2 years of laboratory science (3 recommended)

o Biology

o Chemistry or Physics

o 2 years of history/social science

o 1 year of visual and performing arts

o 1 year of electives from the above list

All Year

o Earn good grades! Freshman year DOES count, regardless of the myths you may have heard. You will have far more options if you start planning now for college and if you maintain good grades.

Fall

o Activate and maintain a COIN 3 account.

o Create a file for the following documents and notes:

o Copies of report cards

o List of awards and honors

o List of school and community activities in which you are involved, including both paid and volunteer work, and descriptions of what you do

o Start thinking about the colleges you want to attend and learn about them via your COIN 3 account.

o Participate in extracurricular activities that you genuinely enjoy; try to find something you are passionate about doing.

Summer

o Enroll in summer school to repeat any classes in which you received a D or F. This will improve your GPA as well as maintain your eligibility for college!
